If your external filter seems completely unresponsive, don’t worry — there are a few common causes that can usually be resolved with a simple check.

Important Safety Notice

Before handling or attempting any maintenance:

  • Unplug the unit from the mains electricity supply.

  • Read the troubleshooting section in your product instruction manual.

Step 1: Check the Fuse

It might sound obvious, but the fuse is often overlooked.

  • Try replacing the fuse in the plug with a new one of the same rating.

  • Ensure the plug is fully inserted into a working socket.

Step 2: Check the Impeller (Motor Component)

A blocked or damaged impeller can prevent the motor from starting.

How to check:

  • Remove the motor head from the canister.

  • Locate and inspect the impeller:

    • Ensure it hasn’t become jammed, dislodged, or clogged with debris.

    • Confirm that the plastic propeller is still attached to the magnetic body and hasn’t separated or split.

    • Check that rubber grommets are present at each end of the shaft.

If everything appears intact, reassemble and refit the impeller carefully.

Step 3: Check Filter Alignment (Newer EF Models Only)

Newer EF filter models use a magnetic connection between the motor head and canister.

  • Ensure the media baskets inside the canister are positioned correctly.

  • If misaligned, the magnetic override may not engage, preventing power.

  • Try rotating the motor head 90 degrees — this often resolves the issue and allows the unit to power up.

Step 4: Try a Different Power Supply

  • Plug the unit into another socket that you know is working.

  • Listen carefully:

    • Is there any sound from the unit?

    • If it remains completely silent, power may not be reaching the motor.

Still No Power?

If the unit is still not working after all the above steps:
