A protein skimmer helps keep saltwater aquariums clean by removing dissolved organic compounds (DOCs) and other harmful substances. These compounds can raise nitrate levels and harm your tank’s balance. While protein skimmers don’t remove nitrates directly, they stop DOCs from turning into nitrates by removing them before they break down.

How It Works:

  • Protein skimmers use tiny air bubbles to trap harmful compounds.
  • Air is pulled in by a pump and mixed with the water to create thousands of tiny bubbles.
  • As the bubbles rise, organic molecules (DOCs) stick to the surface, then move to the collection cup, removing waste from the water.

Can I Use a Protein Skimmer in a Tropical Tank?

Yes, you can use a protein skimmer in a tropical tank, but it won’t be as effective as in saltwater tanks. Protein skimmers work best with saltwater because of the foam and bubbles that form in saltwater. In tropical setups, the skimmer won’t create as much foam, so it won’t remove waste as efficiently. However, surface skimmers designed for tropical tanks are available, which work by skimming the water’s surface.
