Installing a pond liner correctly is essential to prevent leaks and damage. Here’s a step-by-step guide:
Plan Your Pond – Use rope or a hose to outline your pond shape. Excavate gradually sloped sides and create marginal shelves 20–40 cm deep. Ensure the base is level.
Prepare the Base – Remove any sharp objects and lay down an underlay to protect the liner.
Position the Liner – Carefully place the pond liner over the underlay. Avoid treading on it with shoes. Anchor edges around the perimeter.
Fill the Pond – Gradually add water while gently adjusting the liner for a smooth, crease-free finish. Let it settle overnight. Trim excess liner, leaving at least 30 cm overlap.
Edge the Pond – Use paving, grass, or turf to protect exposed liner from UV damage.
Add Equipment – Install pumps, filters, and other equipment before adding fish or plants.
Tips for a Successful Pond:
Location: Avoid overhanging trees; provide sun for at least half the day and shelter from cold winds.
Shape: Large sweeping curves prevent debris buildup and improve water flow.
Depth: Koi need 90 cm–1.2 m; goldfish 50 cm–90 cm. At least 40% of the pond should be at maximum depth.
Stocking & Plants: 1 inch of fish per sq. ft. Marginal plants need 10 cm of water; lilies require gradual submersion.
