Purchasing and adding livestock to your aquarium

At All Pond Solutions we are proud to offer an exceptional range of high quality livestock at the lowest prices. We source all of our aquatic livestock from ethical breeders of whom we know and trust and we treat all of our fish with utmost care and expertise.

Before adding new fish to your aquarium, it’s essential to ensure your tank is properly prepared. For first-time setups, allow 4–6 weeks for your tank to cycle. This means adding substrate, ornaments, plants, and water, and running all equipment. Cycling establishes beneficial bacteria that remove harmful toxins from the water. Products such as aquarium bacteria balls can help speed up this process. Always treat tap water with a dechlorinator to remove chlorine and chloramine before adding it to your tank.

Introducing Fish Gradually

Even in a fully cycled tank, it’s best to add new fish gradually, a few at a time, depending on the size of your aquarium. This gives your filtration system time to adjust to the increased waste and allows your bacterial colony to grow and maintain water quality.

Adding too many fish at once can overwhelm your filter. For example, if your tank supports two fish and you add ten, the bacteria present can only process waste for two fish. The excess waste will lead to dangerous ammonia and nitrite spikes, which are lethal to fish even at low levels (0.25ppm).

Monitor water parameters regularly, and if ammonia or nitrite levels rise, perform a 20% water change every few days until levels return to normal. Once the water quality stabilises, continue adding fish slowly over a period of weeks, testing water before each introduction to ensure a safe environment.

By carefully preparing your tank and introducing fish gradually, you can create a healthy, thriving aquarium while reducing stress and preventing disease among your aquatic pets.
